Connecting with my community has been one of my favorite parts of working at public libraries. Its one of the reasons I took a class about Community Relations and Advocacy!
When I worked at Martin Regional Library, my outreach focus was on local schools, early childhood centers, and the Spanish-speaking community. I developed relationships with school librarians and teachers, led storytimes at CAP Tulsa locations, and worked with organizations like the Power of Families Project. When I transitioned to my current position as the Youth Librarian at the Herman and Kate Kaiser Library, I had to begin the process of learning about a new community area. I have new schools to work with, as well as new demographics to learn about. While the outreach opportunities have changed, it has been exciting transition as I learn how to support this new-to-me community as a library professional. |
